Yesterday I told you about my new way to start a day. Now I am going to tell you what’s my second favourite part of my days from now on: It’s the last minute before I close my eyes and go to sleep. When I silently ask myself this questions: What went well today?
I then go on a treasure hunt. I go through my day, try to remember what I did and what I enjoyed. And so far there have always been quite a few things. Because obviously I am not looking for the great success. I am looking for small pleasures. Like the sunshine in my face from this early spring. My kids laughing. A wonderful chat with a friend. A nice cup of coffee in silence. Meditation. Whatever made me smile.
I even started asking my kids this questions before I would send them off to sleep. It is interesting how different they react to it. Sometimes they’re really thinking hard to find something. Sometimes they easily find three things already they then tell me about. I would love to create this habit in them. I think it is a beautiful way to end the day and I believe this will also help sleep better. Because if you finish your busy day with beautiful thoughts your mind will stick to those rather than all the worries in your head you might had during the day.
We worry too much anyway. About things we cannot change. About things we certainly cannot do anything about in the middle of the night. About things that might never actually happen. About things that are in the past. About other people and their thoughts. It’s all too much and too little focus on the small, good things.
Sometimes I experience something nice during the day and think: Hey, that is something I will remember tonight, before I go to sleep. So it also helps me appreciate small things in the moment. And therefore twice. How cool is that?
